Bruges wasn't all that great; here are the highlights: frites, boat ride, belfry, food. That's pretty much it. P.S. I may change my mind about some things.
Overall I had an okay week. It wasn't quite what I was expecting but the frites were great. I wish we could've gone biking but it was too rainy. :-( Today I went to the Belgian frite museum. At the frite museum we learned all about how frites (pronounced "freets") are made. The first exhibit we went to showed us lots of different types of potatoes. Did you know that potatoes were first grown in Peru? There was one exhibit that had a movie showing how potatoes were harvested and turned into frites. Some interesting things that happened in the movie were the potatoes were put onto "The exercise machine" which rolled them around to get any loose dirt that the wash had missed off, the "river of frites" separated all of the frites from one another so that they could be prefried. At the end of the museum there was a frite shop so we got some frites. The interesting thing is that Belgians eat frites with a fork. I am having a great time in Bruges and my apartment is great. I hope my friends don't miss me too much! I am having fun eating all the great foods! (Especially the Flemish fries!) Today I went to the Royal Observatory. As usual, we took the underground, but we had to switch to a light rail train to get to Greenwich. Today, we went to Buckingham Palace. We took the Underground to the palace. We each got an audio tour guide to lead us through the palace and point out the amazing paintings, sights, and statues and even a secret door.
Queen Elizabeth the 2nd lives in the Palace. She is the queen of the UK, Canada, and a few other places. The queen not only lives in the castle, she works in the castle. Imagine sitting in the castle all day staring at a crown; pretty boring, huh? If I were Queen Elizabeth, I would have everyone drive on the right side of the road! :-) We also went to the Royal Mews. The Royal Mews (RM) are where the queen keeps all of her carriages and the horses that pull the carriages and the horses that pull the carriages. The RM is also where the horses are trained. We also went to an Italian restaurant. My sister and I shared some pasta. I had a great morning. |
