Halloween is coming up and I cannot wait for our sleepover with our friends. They got us costumes ... well, masks that are really cool. I got a red and gold mask, Columbia got a gold one, Kellen got a black and gold one, and Kyra got a blue and gold one. The masks came from Venice.
Last week we had lots of fun. School has been going well and I just recently used up the last of my mechanical pencil lead, so now I'm stuck with pens.

One day last week, we hopped on a train to Trastevere and then we hopped on a tram for 8 stops. When we got off, we were gradually swept into a crowd of people. We headed for Campo Dei Fiori.
We went up to a bakery called Forno Campo Dei Fiori and we watched the baker make focaccia. He even posed for a picture! On our way to sit and eat we passed some baths that were stolen from the public baths by the Farnese family. They were really big! We sat at a bench in the Farnese Piazza and waited for my Dad to bring us the food, and then we sat and drank and talked. Then, we walked to the Theater of Marcellus. It was like a mini Colosseum. We also went up the Capitoline Hill and saw the Imperial Forum. After we left Capitoline, I was so ready to go home! We went to the Leonardo Da Vinci Museum. When we stepped inside, I was expecting hallways and hallways of art, but I was met with something almost completely different.
Machines. I know you're probably thinking, "What? William Gilbert wasn't around until the 1600s!" Leonardo sketched things that he wanted to create. One of the things was the anvil hammer. You turned the crank and a comma-shaped thing turned the hammer on its pivot. When the tip of the comma releases the pivot, the hammer smacks down. That was our best day in Rome so far. The major household items in Italy are much different than in the USA.
The faucets are labeled C and F. Surprisingly, C stands for Caldo, which means hot. And F for Freddo, which means cold. So, watch out! The stoves in Italy are odd. You have to hand light the stove and then control the flow with the knobs. To toast something, you have to put it in a little container and then slide it into the toaster. The elevator in our apartment is a bit strange. When you want to go into the elevator, you have to open up two sets of doors by hand yourself. The elevator doesn't slow down; it lurches. On the Metro there is a TV show called Rubicchio. It is about a criminal who always gets foiled.
Here is his Facebook page. Last Tuesday we climbed to the top of St. Peter's dome. Well, maybe "we" isn't the right word. Half of the Epic Journeyers climbed to the top of St Peter's dome. That half of the family includes: Columbia and Wesley. I stayed back because I wasn't feeling that great and Sojourner stayed back to keep me safe.
Today, we went back to St Peters with our friends, and this time I climbed the dome. It was awesome. I thought the view was spectacular. The staircase was very slanted, and I was glad that I wasn't claustrophobic. Last week we saw the Bone Church. Part of the Bone Church is decorated with bones from the floor to the ceiling. Capuchin monks used to live in Bone Church (I think). Capuchin monks lived a simple life. They wore brown robes and a rope belt to keep the robes from falling off.
We also saw a tremendous fountain. I thought that a statue of a man falling off his horse was the coolest part. We have been staying in Rome. The apartment is great and there is a park just down the road and it is really cool.
I met two people at the park that I am friends with. They both speak very good English. Their names are Maxim and Oliver. My favorite thing to do at the park is "Ride the Waves"! We select a wave, and then we walk across it like a balance beam. We have a lot of cool things in Rome like the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and Hadrian's final resting place. A couple days ago my dad told me that I could have a penguin iPhone case. Today I struck lucky. I think my case is very cute and I love playing on my iPhone with my new case! Yesterday we went to the park and we went on a multi-cycle. We had a great time and we passed by lots of cool things. I didn't know that there was a zoo inside the park! We were able to off road a bit in order to avoid roadblocks. I would not reccomend letting my parents drive anymore! They pretended to run into all sorts of things including: trash cans, trees, fountains, and even walls! We had a lot of fun and my sister threw a huge prissy fit because she "didn't feel safe!" She even demanded a switch of drivers, but that only made things worse. |
