Fresh off the heady laurels of my Italian-language compliments, the Epic Journeyers have bid a fond arrivederci to Italy and bon jour to France. Much as I love eating Italian, I have been longing for more French cuisine. We took a train from Rapallo to Antibes, where Sojourner has booked us a lovely apartment close to the sea. According to the apartment's caretaker, it's owned by a wealthy San Diego family who use it but once a year. (there's that San Diego angle again!)
After checking in, we headed out to lunch around 2:30. Given that it was a) far off-season b) getting on in the afternoon c) a Monday, we didn't have high hopes for finding decent food. Boy were we wrong! We almost passed by a hole-in-the-wall restaurant only a few blocks from the apartment. Instead we decided to give it a shot at the urging of the friendly, English-speaking staff.
I had the moules in cream sauce. It was some of the best I've ever had. Both kids raved about the chicken cutlets (and fries). Sojourner had a divine beef fillet in a roquefort cream sauce. I also order kir cassis (Sojourner thinks that's supposed to be for after the meal. Anyone know?). The girls finished off with some heavenly chocolate torte (which I sampled liberally). After dessert Sojourner and I enjoyed some coffee while the kids played outside at a nearby playground.
Lunch was a direct hit on that spot that needed scratching.
